little conveniences :

by Alicia Demmerle

So this past week was my little girls third birthday and how lucky she was that she got to spend it in Paris. The unlucky thing is that without receiving anything from home yet I had nothing to make her special birthday cake.  I am a crazy about cupcakes but every year I make a special cake for my kids and this year I couldn't do that for my daughter.  With Paris grocery stores you don't have the convenience of just running out to get a cake mold and a cake mix and whip one up real fast.  You also can't just run into a bakery and pick up one in  the window, most bakeries don't make birthday cakes and the one's that do you need to order well in advance.

Although the convenience of the birthday cake was not there I was able to find my heaven.  I found a cupcake shop which is owned by an american.   I love it , the cupcakes are really good and it was so nice chatting with the owner, Cat.  (I am going to try to get a job here.)  She did a cute job at Peyton's cupcakes!!!  Peyton enjoyed them along with her presents, I think her favorite so far is the Doc McStuffins outfit.  She also received some great cards from good friends and family back home to make her day special.

We had Peyton's birthday dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe (very American obviously).  It was great and while we were there we noticed a family with an Ohio State t-shirt (go buckeyes!), Keith had to start a conversation with them and find out where they were from.  It turns out that it was a group of Americans playing for the European Basketball league.  Some of the were from Cleveland Heights, Columbus and Illinois.  They all played for big schools at one point.  The weird thing is that we ran into one of the couples the next day at church , the Illinois player, and we talked to them at length.  They were so nice and it was so good to talk to people about some of the challenges everyone faces when moving overseas.

We made some more great discoveries this week.  The open markets are awesome, just right down the street is an awesome market, I feel like a kid in a candy shop.  I have to try every pastry shop and every chocolate shop.  They are just soooo good, I still can't determine what is the best. Good thing we have to walk everywhere so we can burn off these calories.  Keith and I also found the expat running club and tri club.  I enjoyed a great run with them this weekend.  I have to admit I am looking forward picking my next race here.

Although Life is Good in Paris, I missing some of the conveniences I took for granted in the states.  For instance, I would love to just be able to just shove two kids in a car to get where I have to go and not have to think about whether I need to take the metro, take the stroller or how long the walk is and will the kids last.  I think it is just getting used to the city life with kids.  It has only been two weeks so I know we will get used to it but it is a bit of a struggle now.  I actually miss driving.

As a last note I have to be thankful for the conveniences we still have.....the internet.  What would life be like, it is funny but when I first started working  right out of college and  traveled internationally I never had this great convenience  or I should say the ease of use of it.  It is so nice to have.  Paris has wi-fi all thru the city. Yesterday my kids  talked to their old teachers and friends over skype.  It is so funny that although they are thousands of miles away they have a way of being giddy and goofy as though they are standing right next to each other.  I love it!!!

Until next time..

little successes

by Alicia Demmerle

In our second week in paris we are celebrating just little successes that happen.  It could be the fact we found some of our favorites at the grocery store, we are learning the metro system or that we have found a pool to workout in.  These are just a little of the many we need to celebrate on a daily basis.

The kids are doing better in school, Lance is acting like he has been there forever and even Peyton is doing well.  Of course now we are falling into the holiday season where schools are closed for two weeks ( I don't quite understand what this holiday is for).  Wish me luck that I don't pull all of my hair out by the time they go back.  Thank god Keith has off a few of the days they are off...that will help!  We do have a bunch of parks around us so the kids have plenty of space to run around  Lance is enjoying practicing his soccer (football) when we are there.

We have joined the American Library of Paris which is a big plus since they have story times for the days the kids don't have school.  It is nice even for me to go in and take out american magazines when I want.  Who knew good housekeeping would be my new favorite.

I do love our street, I included a picture below, it is away from all the tourists but close enough to get to everything quick.  I almost felt like a local this weekend, as we were down by the eiffel tower the tourists were just annoying, similar to the way I used to feel working in New York City when it was the christmas season.

One of the big successes for myself and Keith was to find swimming pools to train in.  I went to one today, it was really nice and really big, but much different from the states. Of course no one spoke any english (which I should expect) but there was an older gentleman walking in that sort of explained things to me.  There are no boys or girls locker rooms and I have never seen so many swimmers.  I used to hate it when I had to share a lane, here there are at least 6 people to a lane, the good thing is that it is a 50 meter pool.  I kind of felt like I was swimming in a triathlon with all the people.   The good thing is that I got a swim in and will be back...success.

However you can tell we are still newbees since we went to starbucks and spent 35 Euros for a coffee, tea and a few muffins.  There is a picture below of my most expensive tea.  LOL!!

After only a week I have also given in to some of the Paris styles and went out and bought myself some scarves...yes scarves.  If you don't have a scarf around your neck you are definitely an outsider.

Life is good in paris... and to little successes.

Enjoy some pictures below.

We have arrived!

by Alicia Demmerle

The Demmerle Family has arrived!!!

Sunday was the day of our arrival, coming into Paris in the early hours of the morning.  Of course the kids were more so excited about the movies on the plane so they had no desire to sleep.  Jet lag definitely set in on the entire family.

We arrived at our new flat with nothing in it but rental furniture, the barge with our stuff will arrive in a few weeks,  so it is pretty empty in our new place.  Definitely echoes alot. This means minimal toys for the kids, however it is amazing how kids can keep them self so occupied with empty boxes from new appliances.

Lance wanted to go see the Eiffel tower so bad when we first got there so to keep ourselves awake we walked down to see the beautiful site.  He was in aww, I loved seeing his face when he first saw it.  Poor Peyton's jet lag had set in and she was sound asleep in the stroller.

During the week it was all about getting the kids to their new school and getting them comfortable.  The first drop off was hard and full of tears but it made Keith and I feel much better when we arrived to happy smiles.  Lance seems to have a much easier time adjusting, Peyton is still having a bit of a hard time.  It is funny how  I used to drive 30 minutes everyday to drive the kids to school and now I am walking 30 minutes , which includes a view of the eiffel tower.  When the kids start their school year in September our walk will only be 5 minutes.

The highlight of my day today was meeting some great parents from Lance and Peyton's school and one of the mother's introducing me to the best grocery store in the city. The store had everything, still not as much as the us, but huge for Paris. It is amazing what gets me excited these days.

As far as the language, you can definitely get away with just knowing English, however it benefits you to know French.  I myself would love to know if my neighbor is saying something pleasant to me or telling me something not so nice (like my kids or dog are too loud)  Paris voices are much lower that US voices.  We are also really trying to get used to city living.

Oh yeah, I introduced Lance and Peyton to Nutella crepes...they love them!

So Life is Good in Paris so far, spring is here and the weather is beautiful.
